For More Information . . .

This article has dealt only with the efficiency of the Roth IRA as a sheltered investment, and has completely ignored regulations concerning contribution limits and withdrawals. These are important topics, and constantly subject to change. The IRS is the authoritative source for this kind of information. (A good place to start is this general IRA document known as Publication 590.)

A Roth IRA is the natural place for the least tax efficient entries in your investment portfolio. See this short list in the index funds article.

See Comparing the Calculators for an explanation of why different calculators give different answers for the same inputs.

Remember that with all calculators and numerical examples you need to be clear about two key assumptions that are being made:
  1. Are new contributions measured in pre-tax or post-tax dollars?
  2. On a rollover, are the taxes due being paid from the IRA itself or from outside funds?
